AGS Parents of 9th grade students:
Hello! My name is Barb Huffman and I am the new counselor for the Global Studies Academy. I am so delighted to be here. I wanted to let you know that I have met with all AGS Freshmen this week in the computer lab where we covered some “Guidance 101″ information as well as completing their high school four year plan as a “draft” They also completed a Learning Style Inventory in Naviance Family Connection. I also informed them that they are the first 9th grade class to enter high school under the new 4 X 4 + 2 GPA calculation formula which will determine their class ranking. Below you will find a detailed description of the GPA calculation formula. This is the same as the NCAA Clearinghouse calculation and is one that many districts across the State are adopting. Please call me if you have questions about this. I am also attaching the handout I gave them outlining the GPA calculation and the STAAR EOC testing requirements that they are also the “first” to graduate under. My best to you for a great year. Grade Point Average Calculation for Class of 2015 and Beyond:
For students entering grade 9 during the 201112 school year andthereafter, class rank shall be determined by descending order of
students weighted grade point averages earned in the following
curriculum categories: 1. Four courses in English/language arts; Eng. 1,2,3,4
2. Four courses in mathematics; Alg. 1, Geometry, Alg 2, +4th yr math
3. Four courses in science; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, + 4th yr science
4. Four courses in social studies; World Geog., World Hist., US History, Govt, Economics
5. Two courses in Languages other than English (LOTE). Span 1 4, Chinese 1-4, (levels 3 & 4 weighted) If a student completes more than 18 courses within these five categories
specified above, the students weighted GPA used for class rank shall be calculated using the students
grades within each category with the highest grade point value.
